Hayleigh was diagnosed with Ornithine Transcarbamylase Deficiency (OTC) at 26 months old. After many months of searching for answers as to why she was so sick, an ammonia test was done, which was found to be dangerously elevated. Further testing confirmed a diagnosis of OTC. Hayleigh had many hospitalizations for elevated ammonia in her early years, but throughout middle and high school, her metabolic disorder was more stable. She did well with her diet and medications. However, in 2018, the regimen of medicine and diet became less effective, and she decided to seek the only known cure for OTC, a liver transplant. Unfortunately, the transplant came with many complications and a progressive decline in health. Hayleigh passed away on November 24, 2020, at the age of 25, of liver failure. She was a fighter to the very end.

Hayleigh had a beautiful voice and loved to sing. She was a member of the school choir throughout her years in school. She also sang in a community choir. She graduated from high school and attended college. She loved taking long drives on the Blue Ridge Parkway and hiking on the Appalachian Trail. She loved beautiful waterfalls. She was a lover of all animals, especially her cats. Hayleigh had a witty sense of humor and a strong empathy for others. Not a day goes by that she isn’t missed. She is always on our minds and forever in our hearts.
